S-Abscisic Acid (S-ABA) is a plant growth regulator used in viticulture (grape growing) to enhance the quality and yield of grapes. Here are some key points regarding its usage on grapes:

1. Ripening Enhancement:

S-ABA is often applied to accelerate grape ripening. It can help grapes reach optimal sugar content and improve their color, which is particularly important for red and black grape varieties.

2. Application Timing:

The timing of S-ABA application is crucial. It is typically applied during the veraison stage, which is when grapes begin to change color and soften.

3. Dosage of S-Abscisic Acid:

  • Promote the consistency of new shoot growth and flowering period: From the water absorption period to the early budding period, use 1- 2ppm S-absorbent solution for root irrigation treatment. It helps to unify the growth of new shoots and flowering period, and advance the peak flowering period by about 10 days. ‌
  • Improve the initial expansion of seeded grapes: 10 to 15 days before the beginning of flowering and at the end of flowering period. Spray the whole plant twice with 20ppm S-absorbent solution. Or perform root irrigation treatment. All above help to improve the initial expansion of seeded grapes. ‌
  • Solve the problem of poor coloring and high temperature barriers during the high temperature period in summer: When about one-third of the fruit rooms in the vineyard begin to color, use 1- 2ppm S-ABA solution for root irrigation. Or use a special sprayer for fruit spraying, which will help improve the problem of poor coloring and high temperature barriers. And it can advance the harvest period by 1 to 2 weeks. ‌
  • Other methods of use: including fruit dipping, fruit spraying, and handle coating. It can help improve grape quality, reduce fruit cracking and fruit drop, promote coloring, and harvest early. ‌

4. Benefits of S-Abscisic Acid:

  • Improved color and uniformity of grape clusters.
  • Enhanced sweetness and flavor.
  • Better resistance to environmental stresses.

5. Method of Application:

We usually apply S-ABA as a foliar spray. Ensuring even coverage of the grape clusters is important for achieving the best results.

6. Regulatory Considerations:

Depending on the region, there may be specific regulations and restrictions on the use of S-ABA. It’s important to comply with local agricultural guidelines and restrictions.

Using S-ABA effectively requires careful consideration of the grape variety, growth stage, and environmental conditions to optimize the benefits while minimizing any potential negative impacts.
